What makes me differ from my competitors.
I'm not delving into the childlike elements

I think it's time i acknowledge Frankie Magazine as a competitor for my (soon to be) publication& a source of media my consumer would frequent!

We both believe in a feel-good-factor! Showing our audience beauitful, poetic imagery and we don't necessarily profile the mainstream (Think: The alternatives and little old ladies!) however there are elements that make my publication differ from Frankie.

First of all I don't feel that my consumer would be interested in toys ornaments, toddler-like-doodles on a page being drawings and cupcakes/ icecreams and sprinkles. My consumer is the niche in that market that has a more simplistic taste and would only make well thought through purchases, taking into consideration; where's it coming from, why is it worthwhile buying and what will happen to it after it's no longer of use to me- Taking into consideration every step of the process.

My Consumers Mindest

'Sharing a global mindset, radical revolutionaries are united in their vision for a better world, ecologically and politically. They are part of the millennial generation, who have witnessed the world's transformation via an explosion of digital technology, the internet, and global recession.

Having grown up in a digital age, they are hardwired into the main frame of internet culture. Instrumental in shaping a new frontier of human interaction via digital technology, they are also the forerunners of politicised consumer power through the internet.

They care about corporate transparency, the future of the environment, getting an education without getting into debt, and honest simplicity.'

K I N F O L K

In todays lecture from Kate Vandermeer followed by stalking her  website, I discovered KINFOLF MAGAZINE.

It. Is. Beautiful.

(As a side note I also semi-dispise them because this is a very similar aesthetic to what i'm hoping to achieve with my end of year project). Nevertheless this is a magazine that my target market would read.

http://www.kinfolkmag.com/

Kinfolk is all about 'Small Gatherings'. Dinner parties with 2, 3 or 4 people, how to decorate the occasion and what food have. Emphasis is given to the sourcing of all products.

Break through

Tasmania becomes the first Australian state to ban battery cages for hens. Hopefully the remaining sates including my home state of NSW will catch on soon.

Its interesting how different areas except change quicker than others. For example Austria was the first country to enforce tougher anti-cruelty laws across all areas including caged chickens, chopping of puppy tails and the sale of them in shop windows with cruelty now resulting in fines of up to 24000 dollars!

With such events occurring world wide I believe it necessary to touch on such issues within my publication as a reflection of societal change

Extraordinary Pigeon

Stephanie Wong Extraordinary Pigeon: to create aesthetically garments that looked like  spectacular pigeons but actually weren’t, and to create technically garments that looked animal-skin made but actually weren’t either. The result was her graduation collection, environmentally harmless but with no lack of  a wild imagination.

This however is a beautiful example of a moving image.

http://ikono.org/2011/10/what-is-motion-design/

This clip involves a movie of ants moving up a branch with still text

Possibly too chaotic for my aesthetic. I would prefer greater attention to image and in this particular example, it covers a large part of it.

The use of a still image with a change in colour saturation and inclusive of text

I will be upfront with you and say I am a big Harry Potter fan, it literally defines my childhood. But it also contributed to my creative mind via The Tale of the Three Brothers, motion graphics sequence.

It's such an interesting way to convey a story through an art from.

I would like to utilise such an art form within my end of year publication/ opening sequence
(It's an online one you see!). At first I enjoyed the use of inks and and almost hand drawn motion sequence however i've also discovered other ideas using film and typography. Simple but effective.

Contents?

I want to have sections that are both showing the leading creatives but also showing accessible pieces
Going from my contents page; Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and within each of these titles focusing in on how fashion, food and home related trends apply, do I
  1. Focus on a long editoral spread about a leading trend setter under each heading and the fashion, food and home contents are all local
OR

b.   Simply stick to the fashion, food and home contents and having a smaller non- written section looking at the locally sourced stuff
OR

c.    It doesn’t really matter cause my magazine section is largely image/ editorial based. Prices sprawled through-out aren't important -- that’s what my online forum is about.

My magazine is high quality images/ articles to inspire. I’m going to decide on option b & c.
Keep content simple but high quality, this is what people look forward to seeing 4 times a year. This gives them guidance and everything else is covered on the forum web. I don’t necessary need to focus on local or overseas.
Idea: at the end of every article have a small table stating
Real deal: (Actual thing just reported on), Following the trend (similar product which can be brought internationally)& Keeping it local (similar product but can be brought locally)

Tree hotel

Continuing my search of all things directly related to the natural, I found out about Treehotel. Located in Sweden in the middle of a forest, or at the website describes it, 'unspoiled nature'. The Room options include The Cabin, The Mirrorcube, The Bird's nest, The Blue Cone, The UFO and The Tree Sauna.

My personal favourites are The Mirrorcube, which is camouflaged by outer mirror walls which reflect the forest and The Bird's nest, which camouflages itself to become apart of the surroundings by having its exterior literally resemble a bird's nest

Treehotel is a place where nature, ecological values, comfort and modern are combined and so makes it a perfect example to meet the message behind my media project

The Mentors

potential Mentor #7

Narelle Dore.

Designer/ installation extraordinair

'Alongside the collections, external projects communicate the world where these collections arise from'

In terms of knowing the process, concept or thoughts of a collection, I think that this is imperative in fashion as consumers search for greater meaning in their purchases. This especially inspires me in regards to my stance on ethical fashion, the garment means nothing without knowing the process.
